Moving to Mexico: Are We Ready?

Good morning, friends.

We have been receiving a lot of inquiry from friends and colleagues asking if we’re ready to pack up and move away for 2+ years so I thought I would share with you the answers I’ve come up with. Both are true and equally valid…

… Yes, we’ve been waiting years for this! Neal and I talked about international travels on one of our first dates. I wanted to live in Russia, and Neal in Ecuador. I ended up actually moving to Russia for a study abroad program (you can read some of those adventures here, here, and here). We both had such different passions for the destination and purpose of the trips – yet we both still yearned for the international travelling component together. We did indeed travel to Panama for our honeymoon/first anniversary. It was an incredible taste of dreams coming true. During our time in the Peace Corps, we will be celebrating five years together since that conversation.

… No, we’re never going to be ready to leave. We have already started to pack and it is heartbreaking to have to undo our first home/love nest. We are so not looking forward to missing all the birthdays, celebrations, weddings, births, and holidays over the 2+ years. Time is going to keep moving here while we have our adventures in Mexico, which means that we are going to miss out on a lot of memories. Since we won’t be extremely far away, we are really encouraging people to plan a visit.

Nevertheless, we still plan on moving and being in the Peace Corps for the next 2+ years. It will take a lot of courage to step off that last bit of American soil and board the plane that will whisk us away to our new homeland. Sure, Mexico isn’t that far away but we will certainly still be missing the comforts of normalcy. I am keeping this quote near and dear to my heart…
